I have quit effexor (2 x 37,5 mg day) last monday, 0106. I started with withdrwall at 01 april this year. It took me two month to get off and the last two weeks I took twice 1/8 x 37,5mg a day. If I did'nt use this I felt very sick. When I move my head too fast to the right or left I feel very dizzy. Is anybody outthere experience the same and will this ever go away.
Answer:
No, your doctor is wrong on this one. The symptom you are experiencing is not fear. It is the one withdrawal symptom common (in my experience) to many potent serotonin potentiating antidepressants (e.g. SSRI's, SRI's, and MAOI's). I've experienced withdrawal from serotonergic antidepressants on at least 5 different occasions (i.e. after withdrawing variously from SSRI's, SRI's, and MAOI's) over the years (in search of a more effective treatment). Like many other people, I've experienced the same awkward-to-describe withdrawal symptom you refer to ("When I move my head too fast to the right or left I feel very dizzy"). I've got good news for you. It seems to take many months to completely go away, but go away it does. The first time I had it, I too worried that it might not ever go away. But I've learned repeatedly that it does. Be patient. So will regular off the shelf Gravol. Used in the treatment of nausea but also for motion sickness by working on inner ear equilibrium, which is how it aids with withdrawal dizziness. The advantage - it is easy accessible and affordable, even more so if you purchase the generic brand. Disadvantage - it will cause drowsiness and may interfere with routine tasks such as driving. Though I hadn't tried Gravol for this purpose, I do agree that Gravol can be very sedating ( which could almost make it not worth using during the day for this purpose, for some people). Claritin (loratidine), on the other hand, fortunately is one of the non-sedating type antihistamines, and for me at least, it lived up to that 'billing', working like a 'magic bullet' in being helpful while producing no noticeable problems of its own.
