My wife has been on Paxil (20mg) for about a year. She decided to quit it about ten days ago. She has been sick as shit since, dizzy, nauseous (sp?), headaches, just generally feeling like crap. I have found stuff on the net about this, but nothing on how long it lasts. Does anyone have any experience with this? Her ex-doctor has said there should be no withdrawal.
Answer:
First off, did she stop cold-turkey or gradually taper off of it? SSRIs can have funny effects on the body as a whole if you just stop them cold-turkey. I've been on that precise dose of Paxil for almost a year too--or was, until day before yesterday when my doctor switched me to Luvox (same drug 'family') at 50mg/day--so I'm going to be watching myself like a hawk to make sure I don't take a nosedive. It sounds like her ex-physician doesn't have the first clue as to what he's talking about, and if she did quit cold-turkey on her Paxil, it sounds like she's lucky to not be taking a nosedive. I've never heard of those specific withdrawal symptoms ('withdrawal' isn't really the right word because it implies addiction, which SSRIs do not promote) for Paxil, but like I said earlier, just stopping a medication -can- do weird things to your body -and- mind. I was on the exact same dose of Paxil for six months and stopped cold turkey this past Sunday (today is Thursday). By late yesterday afternoon, I thought my head was going to blow off. I started feeling dizzy/lightheaded occasionally on Tuesday -- the senstation at times feels like I'm falling backwards -- somewhat like vertigo. These sensations were much more intense and frequent by yesterday afternoon; I also felt pretty nauseous and had a brutal headache. I ended up calling my doctor and asking him if this was normal since he hadn't mentioned the "withdrawal" when I last saw him in January (back then he told me to give him a call and let him know how I was feeling once I went off the medication). Anyway, he apologized for not mentioning it, and said all these withdrawal symptoms were quite normal and that I should try going off the medication gradually. So now I'm supposed to take 10 mg for a couple of weeks and then 5 mg for a couple of weeks. I still feel kind of strange -- I'm still getting the sensations of falling backwards once in a while -- but I don't feel nearly as bad as I did yesterday. I hope this solution works for me.
