Question:
Today the Good Doctor prescribed Prozac. I am willing to follow the treatment but am somewhat apprehensive about awful side effects after reading the articles on the Internet. Should I get caught up in the flurry of info on the Net? Will I ever find a medication that allows me to live life normally? I feel like I'm riding a roller coaster in trying to control this depression...Can you offer advice?

Answer:
I'm curious, why were you on Nortriptyline only briefly? What sort of things did it do to you? It worked wonders for me. I wanted to find something that didnt cause wieght gain so I switched to Prozac. It gave me the black coffee jitters, which was ok. I like that however, I got less and less sleep each day. I took myself off the night I got 3 hours, which was after about a week. My pdoc says that the whole antidepressant game is finding one that you can handle the side effects. I think the important thing to remember is that its a highly individual thing. You can only know what it does to you after you take it for a while. All you have otherwise is a list of possibilities. Its day 2 of effexor and so far so good. I like the sounds of this one because it works on noradrenalin among other things so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can handle the side effects. You're best bet is to become an informed patient. I've read a lot on all the SRIs as well as other antidepressives. While many doctors might indicate that its a simple, scientific process to get the right meds, the good ones will tell you it's more trial and error. YES! you should be able to find a medication or combination of medications to relieve your depression. Or at least get you functional (and sometimes that's good enough). My wife and I are both on slightly different med "cocktails." The joke around our house is, "How many mgs. sick are you?" Remember too that some of the meds take as long as four weeks to reach full effect. I had an excellent pDr., and we discussed what worked, what didn't. Had my blood levels checked as needed to see that I reached a therapeutic dosage (enough of the med to do its job). If you can get some control in your medication therapy (and if your doctor doesn't want to give you this control I suggest getting another Dr.), I think you will feel much better. One of the problems of the depressed is a feeling of lack of control. So read, work with, and hang in there on your meds!
