My doctor says that 50mg is the correct dosage and going any higher will just result in more side effects. I'm not so sure. I am feeling considerably better, but I'm wondering if with, say, 100mg/day I'd feel even more better. Should I just increase the dosage on my own, should I discuss this further with my doctor? Should I *demand* he increase my dosage? Or should I just believe in his judgement?
Answer:
Zoloft has a low incidence of side effects. My past experience is that doctors don't give a damn about you so often you are better at doing research and deciding what meds/dosage are best. This sounds dangerous and it is, but if you're where I am you really don't care. I'm tired of going from doctor to doctor. They really could care less. I was on Zoloft for a while and took the max. dosage of 200mg and had no trouble whatsoever. One day I accidently took my dosage twice (400mg, double the max dose). I was up all night with a splitting headache; then for the next 3 weeks I was VERY manic. Of course I wouldn't recommend any one do this on purpose. well, jared, it's definitely worth discussing with your pdoc, if you haven't already. the maximum dose is 200, so you still have a ways to go in that department. i don't believe there's an actual blood test to see if your zoloft levels are in the therapeutic range, but 50 seems awful low - i was on the full 200 right before i got switched over. then again, if your pdoc thinks your dysthymia isn't that severe, and if there are possible concerns that increasing your dose could set off some kind of hypomanic/manic or anxiety state, keeping your dosage low might be a good course, too. but playing around with med dosages prolly isn't too smart right off the bat, especially since the higher your dose goes, the longer it takes to wean off of the drug altogether. talk it over with the pdoc, tell him/her that you think you could do better with more meds, and see what happens.
