What constitutes a fair trial on a particular drug therapy? When do you give up? When do you let the side-effects stop the trial? I have been through 15++ drug trials over the last 10 years -0- I am very sensitive to most ssris and many tcas. When do you give up and try another therapy? How do you know that relief isn't just a few days away?
Answer:
You don't ever know. There aren't many other therapies to try other than the drugs, there are just the psychotherapies and ECT. There is a new magnetic one in trial. There are some oddball therapies emerging that may be useful, like Maitri Space Awareness or that Japanese bed rest bit (I forget the name). There are no trials at all for those ones. There are new types of drugs, like SNRI (Effexor) and SSDRI (Wellbutrin) and some docs are beginning to use small doses of anti-psychotics and anti-convulsants. Genrally you give it 8 weeks, if at that stage the side effects are still unlivable, or relief has not been gained give it up.
