I took effexor at my original diagnosis. It worked for about 9 weeks and then I regressed to a deeper depression than before. I am sorry to say that I am still searching for the magic drug. 9 more weeks on paxil, no response and now 2 weeks on serzone. At least this one won't make you fat. Paxil gave me 30lbs. Effexor made me a sort of anorexic. Force yourself to eat.

I've been on Effexor for about a year and 1/2 now, and it's been very successful for me. Many years ago I went through the "medication tango" where I tried everything that was on the market and nothing worked for me until we tried Elavil. I was on that for many years until about 2 1/2 years ago it stopped working. Went through another medication tango with the newer meds and found the only one that worked for me was Effexor. I started at 75mg and worked up to my current dose, 150mg twice a day, over about 3 weeks. Two to three weeks after that it started to work. Some people get results quicker. I've never had much trouble with it - I'm constipated, but that seems to be standard with all meds; I have no sex drive or interest, fortunately(?) I don't have a partner so I don't worry about that too much; and I've never had the problems some people have if they don't stick to a really strict dosing schedule. I do take both doses early in the day (I never take the second dose later than 2pm), and I take 250mg of Trazodone at bedtime for sleep. Word is that going off Effexor is an absolute b*tch - I hope I don't have to find out any time soon. I've been on Effexor XR (300 mg) for about 3 months now. It is the BEST Antidepressant I've ever tried. First couple of weeks I was very tired, but that side effect passed. The one that continues to linger (and I've had it with every antidepressant that I've ever taken is CONSTIPATION). Thus far Metamucil (my normal solution along with diet) does nothing for me. I've had to resort to the ole enema bag for relief. But...Given the choice between severe depression and enemas....I'll take enemas any time! Hope you have good luck with it! Is you P-doc prescribing Effexor or Effexor XR? The XR is time released.
