Question:
how do you know when it's ok to stop taking your medication? I want to do it because I dislike the side effects (dry eyes, which prevent wearing of contact lenses, which prevents playing sports, which prevents exercising to help lift the depression, you get the idea), but I know a lot of people think about when they're manic so it's a bad idea, and so on...tia

Answer:
I don't know what kind of medication you are on but I am on 200mg of Zoloft a day. I am feeling good and in the past I have gone of my medication, but it only lead to a really bad crash. You should talk to your doctor about going off a medication or changing one, or even eye drops. Some people who have gone off their meds have found that a medication worked the first time but will not work a second. It really depends on how depressed you were before the medication. Why don't you ask your dr to change the med? There is probably something out there that will work for your depression and not cause too many side effects. Also, there are artificial tears that you could use in your eyes. I'm using something called Hypo Tears, but my opthamologist said not to use anything with preservatives more than every 4hrs. There are other things to use if you're going to be applying them more often, which you may need to do with the contacts. It is NOT a good idea to stop taking the meds because of not-serious side effects. The depression is more dangerous than the dry eyes.
