Has anyone taken Paxil for 3 months or more and not gained weight? I'm hoping that increasing my exercise a little and watching what I eat will keep off the weight everyone is complaining about. I've been on the drug less than 2 months.
Answer:
I was on paroxetine 50mg for about 6 months once, and my weight didn't change at all. I haven't experienced any weight fluctuations that appeared to be caused by any SSRIs; lately (ie over the last few months) I've lost a stone or so, but that's been caused by depression/anxiety rather than medication. The only drug which seemed to have the potential to muck about with my weight by changing my appetite was dothiepin (a TCA) which initially made me very hungry, and then later completely lose interest in eating. Well, I've only been on Paxil about 2 months, but I've LOST weight. My appetite is greatly reduced and I eat much less than before. (An aside: it seems to be working for the depression, but not for anxiety like it's "supposed" to - as soon as I went off my low dose of anti-anxiety meds, the anxiety came back full force.) What I'm wondering is, after 3 months, I'll suddenly have this huge appetite and turn into a whale, or if this weight loss trend will continue, 'cuz it's fine with me! I was on Paxil for almost a year and I never gained weight, I think it depends on how your system takes it, if you have not gained weight yet you probably won't. I have been on Zoloft for over four months, and I have actually lost weight, so I wouldn't worry too much It sounds as if experience varies, as with just about every side effect of every drug I've tried. Won't it be nice when we can finally have meds that help without driving us even crazier with the side effects! On Paxil, my worst side effects have been nausea plus horrible constipation that alternates with diarrhea. Fortunately my brain likes this stuff better than my gut!
