Question:
I'm an 18 year old guy, and I've been suffering depression for some 10 years + (owing to various deaths in the family, bullying, general self-worth problems, things like that) and just a couple of weeks ago, I finally visited the doctor, where I was prescribed lofepramine.

Answer:
I have run into women whose partner refuses to get treated. These women get so frustrated because they know something needs to be done, but their partner is in denial and there is nothing they can do until their partner accepts his illness. They only thing they can be counselled to do is evaluate the relationship and decide if it is still worth it if the partner refuses to get treatment. Side effects are an issue, however you do get used to the effects and after one week to a month they "should" ease off. Some side effects are persistent (dry mouth being one of them) but you will get used to them. And they should go away somewhat. With most anti-depressants I have taken my brain has felt weird at it adjust to them. This generally goes away in a week to a month. Be sure to give the medication a good run so you can get past this adjustment period! And talk to your doctor if you are having problems. If after a month, you still have severe side effects -- talk to your doctor about them. If they are severe enough, you can change the medication to something else. Each anti-depressant will affect you or anyone else differently (the side effects I get, may not be the ones you get) so give each anti-depressant a good run of at least a month -- hang in there! Note that episodes of depression can get worse over time; it's called the "kindling effect." Therefore, it's not a bad idea to try the meds to nip it in the bud. I'm using Zoloft right now. I tried St. John's Wort, but it did not help in the long run. Herbal remedies can be good, but the side effects and potencies are less predictable than they are with pharmaceuticals. BTW, I'm married, and my wife has been very supportive of me through all this. I hope you will find that to be true in your case as well. Side effects are associated with all drugs including aspirin and cold remedies. They tend to pass in a few weeks; if not, meds can be changed. SJW is a drug and it has side effects; we just have less knowledge of it. As for 'natural', arsenic is natural, but hardly benign. If 'addiction" is anything to worry about, it is because being addicted to the drug does all kinds of harm; prescribed psychiatric drugs do not cause addiction in that sense taken as directed , Well, let me put it this way: What are you afraid of? Tell me, and I'll tell you why you should have no fear. A very few patients do get into trouble with tranquilizers and stimulants. It is true that you can't stop some of the drugs without discomfort unless you do so in a very gradual way under your doctor's directions. The only change in your 'personality' is that you will feel better. There are several opitons available to correct sexual dysfunction , wich will probably not occur anyway. You will not drop dead of a side effect--well maybe, but you might be hit by lightning or eaten by an escaped lion; not likely--you won't turn into a steret junky or Mr. Hyde, nor will never get erect again. BTW, why lofepramine andd not an SSRI or one of the newer drugs? You might ask doc.
