Ok, so it seems a substantial number of people take Depakote, Lithium and Wellbutrin (or some other AD). Taking this combo of meds for a lifetime or an extended period of time, shouldn;t we be concerned about Liver Function long term? I mean, I just take Depakote 500mg daily and Serzone 150mg daily (just started them) and I have to go to get my liver function test and CBC on a regular basis and all....but I can't help but be concerned about my poor liver and kidneys :/
Answer:
BiPolar has a high risk of mortality. I'd say it's not a bad trade-off (assuming to meds work) to avoid the suicide risk and enjoy life more, at the risk of * possible * liver damage. Though lithium is eliminated almost entirely through the kidneys, it seems to do them no harm; they're just well-washed, as you will definitely do #1s more. However, this causes you to lose both sodium and water; replace by mouth as needed ("sodium" is taken as table salt; a little licked from the web of your thumb). As lithium also interferes with sweating (same reason), stay out of the sun and other hot places if you are at all heat-sensitive. Valproates are metabolised in the liver, and /can/ screw it up royally. This is why your liver function is monitored right along with your valproate levels, or should be; My pdoc authorizes no blood tests whatsoever. Maybe I need to figure out which ones I need and get him to authorize. This is how he likes to do meds, I decide the dosage. But I don't know how to read the results of these tests so I would have to get him to do it. Maybe I should get a real pdoc instead of monitoring and adjusting my own meds. Valproate is known to be pretty hard on the liver; fatal in some cases. You should be having routine valproate-level tests; at the same time, a check for liver function is made. Lithium is known to depress thyroxin levels, which may have to be made up by taking thyroxin. Again, lithium level should be tested routinely; in this case, test of thyroxin level (rather than liver function) is made at the same time.
