I started Serzone last week. My p-doc told me to take it all at night. Everything I have read says the dose should be split am/pm. The starter pack is also clearly marked this way. Does anyone have a clue as to why he would prescribe it this way? I'm very curious and I don't see him again for 3 weeks. I also take Trazodone for sleep.

It is important to remember that the half-life of antidepressants does not have much effect on its actions. The effects of antidepressants don't seem to rely on constant blood levels (though blood levels of some antidepressants are important only to tell you if you are taking enough of a daily dose). Antidepressants don't start and stop working with daily fluctuations in blood level. Serzone can be taken as a single night-time dose and is very effective for many people when taken this way. Serzone is sedating for many people, so a night-time dose promotes sleep, while avoiding a day-time dose prevents daytime sedation. Some may find the larger night-time dose too sedating, however, and be groggy in the morning. I guess the moral of the story is that your doctor is trying to avoid day-time sedation in you. It may work. It may not. The important thing is to monitor you symptoms and side effects and keep your doctor informed so that doses can be changed to suit you best. When i was on serzone i was instructed to take it all at night because it caused drowsiness, however it had the opposite effect on me. I started skipping dosages and experimenting with the time and amount to stop the insomnia before i finally went off it. I didn't know about trazodone then. Since i felt that the pdoc didn't listen to me, i stopped seeing the pdoc & taking the medication abruptly (o.k. don't flame me, i know that wasn't the brightest thing to do.)
