I've been taking Prozac 2-1/2 years. The first six months I was part of a PTSD research study and had a 50/50 chance of being on Prozac or a placebo. I felt better immediately. I started on 10 mgs and gradually increased to 50 mgs. I kept improving, but at some point, the side effects became too much (muscle twitching mainly).

I have been on Prozac now for about eight months. Started off at 20mg, then 60mg, and then up to 80mg. Nothing seemed to work so I started backing off my dosage but plunged into an extremely dark pit. I couldn't handle it so I went back to 80mg. I am currently at 120mg as well as 600mg of Lithium and am finally feeling some positive results. The recommended dosages are just that. But, each person is different. Consult your doctor first but you should be prepared to give the meds at least 2 - 6 weeks for an accurate assessment. Consistency is also very important. Make sure that you take your meds at the same time every day faithfully, and check for food contra-indications. I have been on Prozac now for about eight months.
