I just got a prescription for 10mg prozac for 7 days, and then am to start taking 20mg. I want to know how I'm supposed to know this stuff works. Am I supposed to start feeling better quickly, or is it a long term deal? What I need to feel is happy, and energetic. When will I start feeling more energetic? I feel like I would do better on some sorta amphetimine. But I don't know.
Answer:
Do NOT take amphetamines to improve your mood. They, unlike AD's, are addictive. It sounds as though you're into immediate gratification, though, and I suspect any advice contrary to what you want to hear will fall on deaf ears. Prozac takes time to work. Some report up to 2 months. For me it took about four weeks but the wait was worth it. I, too, had felt depressed longer than I cared to remember and by the time I saw the doc, I wanted to try anything. As a former drug abuser I can say with certainty that satisfying the urge to feel better immediately has its consequences. One might be tempted to think that consequences can be dealt with in the future but isn't what you're going through now, itself, a consequence of some earlier decision? Think of your problems as a snowball rolling downhill gathering momentum ... how are you going to put the brakes on that? Prozac, or any other ssri drug takes time to build up in your body. The reason the doctors start you out slowly is because of the side effects. You are looking at 4 to 6 weeks before you feel the full affect. Don't let that discourage you just know that help and happiness is up ahead. It took time for you to get to the bottom of the pit and now it will take a little time to climb back out. By the way you may even feel worst before you feel better.
