I'd like to hear personal stories about doxepin. For depression, for anxiety? Has anyone taken this with Tegretol. There is a reported interaction, but my pdoc is not worried about it.

I take it for depression, right now at 150mg. It was the first med that worked for me. I went off it a few years ago and then tried a couple of newer meds, an SSRI and a SNRI. Both of those worked but both also stopped working. So I'm back on sinequan, my old trusty. I chose to go back on the tricyclic because it has more history for long-term use and I read that tricyclics are better for major depression. I get few side effects, mostly just dry mouth, some drowsiness and the munchies. I've never taken doxepin with Tegretol (don't even know what it is). I took doxepin (100 mg) for depression for almost 2 years.... didn't like it much and it didn't seem to help me that much either -- helped a little, but not completely. I had problems with metallic tastes and dry mouth from it, and it is *very* sedating. I was out like a light about 90 minutes after taking it and would sleep 9, 10, 11 hours. I took 25mg doxepin with 600mg Tegretol and had MAJOR side fx. I couldnt multitask, like music in the car while driving. I couldnt remember my address. I twitched and jerked constantly, to the point of looking like constant seizures. I stopped the doxepin and the toxicity went away. I now take 1000mg of tegretol without HALF the side fx of teg + doxepin. I only took the doxepin at night to combat migraines, but had to sacrifice the lack of head pain that doxepin granted me for my mental capacities, which were null and void while on both drugs. To be honest, i was a complete retard. It seemed that since the both of them are tricyclic compounds, having the tri-ring structure, they interact, somehow, and it isnt well documented. My doc didnt even know about it. So be careful! Yeah, the doxepin daze. If you take it as an AD, like for a long time, then it isn't so bad, mental processes get back to normal. The first month or two though, it's thinking in slo-mo.
