Question:
Recently, a study was conducted at Columbia University testing negative ion therapy for depression. The CBS Evening News reported that treatment with a negative ion generator was as effective as Prozac. I found a web site that sells the negative ion generator that was featured on CBS Evening News at http://www.purifyonline.com/ (Model Wein VI-2000). I was hoping that someone could provide me with more info about this form of treatment for depression and anxiety.

Answer:
I'd be real interested if anyone could come up with a reference for that study. I sure would like to take a good look at it.... 1. Why would they report it on "CBS Evening News" and not a medical journal? (Or did they? It's possible the news story simply didn't mention the journal article.) 2. Was it because negative ions are that good or Prozac isn't? 3. What were the side effects? This was cross-posted to an asthma support group, and for people who have breathing disorders you have to be very careful, since some air "cleaning" devices produce ozone. Please check _Consumer Reports_ for which devices produce ozone before you buy one. Don't get me wrong, I think a proven, non-chemical treatment for depression would be wonderful...but it has to do more good than harm. Also, many department and discount stores sell ion generators and combination air-filter/ion generators, so before you buy one over the web, check to see if you can get one that meets your needs for less (plus you wouldn't have to wait for the shipping time to start getting any benefit.) There is no evidence that negative ion generators are effective in treating depression. The people who are selling the Wein VI-2000 are just selling snake oil. Having lived in California all my life, near the ocean all my life, I have heard (all my life) that the ocean "attracts" depressed folks like a magnet because it generates negative ions which can often "soothe" or "calm" a sad person. Naturally this vast body of water can be soothing and peaceful in and of itself, but I have heard for many many years now that it's the ions... I don't have any proof, scientific or otherwise, but I myself am inclined to believe it. The key property of negative ion "treatment" is the altered *physical* state of the particles (ie, the fact of there being rather more negative ions around than usual) rather than any alteration to their chemistry.
