Anyone know whether I'm likely to have a similar reaction to the Wellbutrin? I didn't have this with Paxil.
Answer:
I was recently (2.5 weeks) moved over to Zoloft from Paxil. It worked great. However, a few days ago, I had a light case of hives, but didn't think much of it. Day before yesterday it got very bad and yesterday I saw a GP (I hadn't connected it with Zoloft) who said that it was probably the Zoloft, pulled me off and put me on Wellbutrin (my pdoc is out of town and unreachable until next tues). Have others experienced this, or am I just cursed? My sympathies to those who have experienced it, this is miserable. Woke up this a.m., after my customary two hours of fitful sleep and my hands and feet were so swollen it hurt to use them. Popping Benedryl as often as I can, per GP's instructions, but it's just making a dent. GP also said I get another 7-10 days of this, yeeha. I have no idea whether you will have the same reaction with wellburtin. I do knwo that these kind of reactions are often considered serious, and that you should be very careful before you take another SSRI.\ I'm allergic to Sulfa (an antibiotic). i'd taken it when i'd had bladder infections in the past with no problem. And then one day about 30mins after I took a pill on a refill on a Rx (the first fill hadn't gotten the infection...this was about three days after i'd stopped, and it had become clear it WASN'T gone) I broke out in hives and was really itchy. I'm allergic to bees, and with bee stings this is a really bad sign (whe your whole body goes this way) so i took a taxi down to emergency, where i got to sit in the waiting room for 4 hours. but at least i knew i would be ok. (it turns out that usually first time anti-biotic reactions are not as bad as bee stings, though still need to be taken seriously). Anyway, I now get to have written on my medical files/pharmacy notes etc ALLERGIC TO SULFA ANTIBIOTICS, and that means that they don't give me any anti-biotics in that class at all. So i will have to take amoxicillan, penicillan etc intead. i also wear a medic alert bracelet, since anti-biotic reactions tend to get worse over time and lets face it, if you are knocked out in some type of accident they are a lot more likely to give you sulfa then zoloft :-). i would talk with your pdoc when he gets back. And i would watch it very carefully if you try to take an ssri again. but i'm not a doctor, just someone who has been allergic to a couple of things... and so gets to find out about them in a general way (i even get to carry a bee sting kit, including needle in the summer if i'm out the city...i'm just glad i'm not so allergic taht i have to carry it IN the city.) If the allergic reaction IS to the Zoloft then your GP is right it will probably take a week or 2 for the hives to fade completely... SSRI's need to build up in the body over a period of time to work properly and I assume it takes them about that long to leave the body as well. As to whether or not you are actually having a reaction to the Zoloft or to something else... Have you had a major systemic allergic reaction to anything before? Do you have other allergies? Did you have any problems on the Paxil? Are you taking any other medications, supplements or unusual foods that could cause an allergic reaction? I haven't heard of anyone being allergic to an SSRI and I don't think it's common, but it's certainly possible.
