Question:
Is there anyone who could help out with this? I'm also interested in 'subjective' experience with these two antidepressants. All that I've heard is that Zoloft is a 'weaker' version of Prozac. Weaker side-effects? Less effective?

Answer:
Fascinating. I certainly hope that there is just a *little* bit more information available... This approach certainly *could* work , but there really has to be some diagnostic guidelines and 'statistical' patterns that at least point towards guidelines in the prescribing of these relatively powerful drugs. As I understand it these are two of the most widely prescribed antidepressant drugs in the world today. It is also my understanding that they are more than just different brand names for the same drug. I do understand antidepressent drug's specific effects on a person are difficult to predict accurately due to individual differences, but is 'self'-medication (so to speak not literally) and personal observation the only comparative source? And... if personal experience is the only information available is there anyone who's tried both and would be willing to share the effects with the understanding that the effects for another individual may well be different? I've been on both of them and didn't notice any significant differences. I switched from Prozac due to side-effect problems (disturbed sleep/ night sweats). These problems may have been less pronounced with Zoloft, but were still there. I also noticed, with both, a loss of effectiveness after long term use (>1 yr.). basically, Prozac and Zoloft are both SRI's (Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitor), which you maybe already knew. In a nutshell, they're different drugs doing essentially the same thing. since they're not the same drug, they will effect a person differently; if a depression patient is put on Prozac (or Zoloft or Paxil, another SRI), and it doesn't seem to do much (or the side effects are too difficult), their doctor will either modify the amount of medication or change to a different med. Also, some patients will have success with one, but in time, for various reasons, may need to be changed to another. I may be wrong, but I don't think it's a matter of one being "stronger" or "weaker" than the other. they're just different. I was diagnosed with dysthymia which is depression that comes and goes about 7 years ago. I took Prozac for two years about 7 years ago. I stopped because I was getting severe heartburn every day. I had never had heartburn before in my life. I also had no sexual desire. I stayed off meds for about 3 years but could not handle the PMS and anger/feeling stressed out all the time. I have PMS 2 weeks out of the month. I would get irrationally angry like small things were the end of the world. I tried Wellbutrin for about 3 months and had the shakes so bad I couldn't stand it. My doctor thought increasing dosage would help but I just kept getting more anxious. I then went to Zoloft and am currently taking 175mg every day and seem to be able to function ok even though I still have no sexual desire or very rarely and I have trouble being sociable. I also have ADD and I took Ritalin for about a year with the Zoloft. It helped me focus but I felt hyper and that was with only taking 2.5mg every 4 hours. It did help with my social skills ,however. I was not afraid to interact with new people and situations. I hope this helps with the question you asked. My 12 year old daughter has been taking Prozac 20mg for about 3 years now. She was also taking 20mg. sr ritalin but we stopped for the summer to see how she does. She seems to be doing ok without it so far. School will tell. She did cut down to 10mg.
