I would like to know more about zoloft, like is it a good antidepressant and anything positive and negative about it. My dad was just prescribed the medication after his primary care practitioner diagnosed him as depressed.
Answer:
I took Zoloft for a year. When I first started taking it, I experienced headaches for a few days, then no other side effects besides gaining 40 pounds, most of it in the last4 months of taking it (before those few months, I was working out 5 days a week. There are essentially three types of insurance coverage we can choose where I work. Full network, partial network (Point of Service?), and non-network. We opted for the partial network at the time because it was cheaper since the doctor I went to was out of network. My wife tried one of the internists in the network because she was a woman doctor. She liked her so I started seeing her for a few things including a rash I have on various parts of my body (psoriasis?). Rather than send me to a dermatologist, she prescribed the medication she thought he would prescribe. I went along then. But during this last episode (I've had a headache since 23rd June) she attempted to diagnose and treat and she really did a good job getting me on medication that took the pain away. Only problem is it is somewhat addictive and I had to come off of it before a month was over. But I was still in pain. Meanwhile, we had done a CT scan and that was normal and we had ruled out meningitis (no fever). But when she took me off of Soma she allowed me to choose whether to stay in her care and let her give me antidepressants or to go to a neurologist who would be more specialized in headaches. I opted for the neuro because I didn't see her looking for root cause. Well, the neuro didn't look for root cause either and I'm with two totally different doctors now but that's beside the point. I believe there are specialists for a reason. An internist or family practitioner may be able to spot a classical case but, in my opinion they should say, "I recognize this as widgetitis; let me refer you to a widgetologist," and that should be that. There are too many nuances in medical care for an internist to know everything about everything. I'm a chemical engineer. I believe that you can take a good ChE and train him or her to do just about anything technical. But if I have an electrical question I go to an electrical engineer. I may know a good solution, but four times out of five that EE is going to know a better one that I wouldn't have thought of. We engineers have a code of ethics we go by. Has anybody seen a code of ethics for doctors?
