I will bet that less than 5 percent of the population can accurately describe how Prozac works. Most people either think it's a Valium-like anitanxiety drug, or an "upper" with an effect like amphetamines.
Answer:
Well, as an Assistant Professor in a School of Medicine who teaches medical and graduate students about drugs and does basic biochemical research on neurotransmitter receptors, I would probably have to be in the 0.1% category WRT what I know about prozac, SSRI's, drug action, and neurotransmission etcetera. Funny thing is, I don't think that my wonderfully profound understanding has made one wit of difference as to how the zoloft actually acts within me. :-) I am not, on the other hand suggesting by any means that it is not important to understand how drugs work, and what they can and cannot do. I am also not saying that the public perception of a drug has no effect on a persons perception of a drug, nor that a person's perception of a drug has no effect on the actual effectiveness of the drug. (And I am not not using a double negative there. Yeesh, thats' what comes from avoiding English classes and concentrating on science classes.) Everyone knows how the "pacebo effect" can make a sugar pill work wonders. Just trying to strike some kind of balance. It is hard to do when you crosspost to the groups you chose to crosspost to. What I was saying in the original post was that most people do not understand how Prozac (or any other antidepressant) works, on the gross level of being an antidepressant. I wasn't really referring as to the understanding of the biochemical action, etc. I mean, people don't understand that the drug has no immediate effect, it doesn't make people "high", it's not an "upper", it can't improve the mood of a normal person, side effects will outweigh benefits unless the person is truly depressed, things like that. I often hear comments like "you're all stressed out, you should take a Prozac" and the like, such a comment really ought to be "...take a Valium".
