Question:
I was on prozac 40mg for 2 months and then cut it out for a week. Then I started zoloft 50mg and then 100mg. Trouble is i am *so* tired all the time I could sleep for ever. I no longer wake early, I just sleep straight through. Then I sleep for 3 hours in the afternoon. When i was on nothing for a week, this tiredness did not lift. Is it the illness or the SSRI's doing it????

Answer:
I've ramped up on Zoloft 3 times in the past year (I tried other meds twice because I do not enjoy Z's infamous sexual side effects, but neither worked as well as Z). All 3 times I experienced what you are now, extreme tiredness and the desire/NEED to sleep all the time. In my experience, this fades after a couple/few weeks. (So does the sexual dampening, though this takes more like a few months.) Depression can make you want to sleep all the time as well, but in my case it amplified my insomnia -- I was hardly sleeping at all. Z's initial somnolence effect was welcome! What I find long-term though is that after this wears off, Z also tends to amplify my insomnia. Buspar helps counter this. All in my humble experience, of course. These medicines don't work across the board like Advil for a headache... make sure your prescriber treats you like an individual, not a statistic. :) I've had sort of the opposite problem. I go to bed around 11:00 pm. I ususally am awake by 3:00am, and raring to go. So starts my day. However, by around 1:00pm I need toothpicks to keep my eyes open. That passes after a bit. This has been going on for about 5 months now. I don't seem the worse for wear. I think it just takes some getting used to. Probably the meds. Possibly if you have been depressed for a while, it could be that your brain is saying to itself "thank God I can finally sleep." Although I could be wrong. I know I was on 50mg of Zoloft for what seemed like forever. I reached a point where I grew very very tired and all I wanted to do was sleep. Then the doctor upped my dosage to 100mg. The tiredness became a whole lot worse. With me, I think it was the Zoloft. The bad thing is, everybody is different, so for you it could be the Zoloft, like it could be the depression, or it could be another physical ailment altogether.
