Question:
I've just started taking Wellbutrin for dysthemia and seasonal affective disorder. I'm interested in any negative personal experiences or research associated with Wellbutrin.

Answer:
I'm on wellbutrin SR 150 mg. two times a day, for depression. I started out on Zoloft, which put me to sleep; switched to Paxil which gave me high blood pressure, then switched to Wellbutrin. So far, I like the results. I do believe I also have ADD, but my doc ruled that out w/ some testing. But in spite of that diagnosis, the Wellbutrin, which was approved recently for ADD, is doing the trick for me. As others have said, the appetite has left, but then again, I find this good, since I'm overweight and can stand to lose weight. I feel more awake than when I was on the other 2 meds. It's going to react differently with each person. I had a fairly positive experience with Wellbutrin. I'd been on Prozac for over a year, and while it certainly helped my depression, I'd almost say it helped it too much: Even things that I think now SHOULD have bothered me didn't. Prozac also destroyed my libido and sexual functioning. Totally. But at least during that time I was able to work out some serious long-standing major unresolved issues in weekly therapy with a wonderful LCSW. When I went off Prozac (I tapered down but did NOT continue a maintenance dose the way most psychiatrists suggest) everything was fine for a couple of months, then I started having trouble with irritibility, which I knew was probably the first signs of depression kicking back in. But I was NOT willing to go back on Prozac. I did some research (thank the lord for the internet!) and decided that Wellbutrin seemed to be a good choice for me (I strongly suspect undiagnosed ADHD with me as well; my daughter has been diagnosed and takes Ritalin). I told my internist (I was no longer seeing the psychiatist who'd supervised my meds; she'd discontinued participating in our insurance plan) and she agreed, so I started on Wellbutrin-SR, 150 mg per day with the intention that I'd add a second pill and go up to 300 mg per day in a couple of weeks.
