Question:
I've been taking Paxil for two and a half weeks now. The side-effects have subsided, but the depression and anxiety remain unchanged. Am I expecting too much too soon? Should I be feeling any effect by now? I'm going to stick it out for a few more weeks, but I'd appreciate advice/experience from anyone who's taken this same med. How long before the depression and anxiety should start to go away?

Answer:
When I first started any type of psych drug, it was paxil. The kick in time *so they tell me* is 4-6 weeks. It took at least 4 weeks. But they kept my level high so when I did get relief it was fast and hard hitting. I am also on Paxil. I've been on it fo aprox. 2 months. It takes about 3-4 weeks for your body to adjust to the medication - at least it did for me. I don't believe it will get rid of your attacks. It just takes the edge off to where you can handle normal everyday functions. Medications and therapy should go hand in hand together. You should be starting therapy soon once the Paxil starts taking effect. Just hang in there and you should start feeling calmer or more relaxed in maybe another week. From what I understand, your experience is not unusual. I've heard that Paxil can take from 4-6 weeks to work. I take it, and it took about 3-4 weeks for me to feel a noticeable effect. Now, about a month and a half since I began, I think it's helping quite a bit. Paxil can actually increase anxiety initially (it did with me, but this wore off fairly quickly). I'm glad your side effects are starting to go away. Hope you begin to feel better soon. Stick with it before trying another drug of its kind. Talk to your doctor. Maybe he/she will want to increase the dosage...is you started really low, now that you're over the side effects would be a good time to play around with the dosage to find what does work.
