Has anyone here had any experience with Buspar (buspirone) as an alternative to benzodiazepines for treatment of the anxiety component of depression? I've read some good things about it lately, but it's all been in professional literature, not from end-users like us. I'm going for a second-opinion evaluation on the 18th of March and would sure like to have some intelligent questions/backup for my new pdoc.
Answer:
I have been taking it for nearly a year. I have had no significant difficulties with it. Most commom side effect can be diziness which I do experience sometimes. Also it can be hard on the kidneys so if you have any evidence of kidney malfunction, this may not be good for you. Read manufacturer's literature on line and found that they had no long term studies of buspar - short-term results were excellent. My pdoc and I have been working together for a long time so he is comfortable letting me decide when to take it, with a maximum dosage limit. Sometimes I don' take it at all so there is minimal buildup in my system - that concerns me. What would be nice is an "instant-acting" SSRI drug. That is, one with a short half-life so you can take it on an as-needed basis like many people do with benzos. This would be good for actors too, as when you want to be moody, you stop taking the pills! This would also be good for people prone to drinking, as you conviently discontinue prior to a drinking session, then Monday before work, you pop your "happy pill". I'm on Zoloft myself, and after only 3 days, I notice a big difference. It works great on the depression, but I don't get the highs either. It levels out my moods combined with beta blockers for high blood pressure. Before meds, I was a mess. I was moody as hell, but the highs were not full-blown manic. Darn. I found that I'm also "connecting" with people better, like when I do acting in acting classes. I'm also more "in the moment" when talking to people.
