I've heard that this is a rare side effect that you might need to take this for the rest of your life. How rare is this side effect?
Answer:
Some Docs want you to keep coming back just for the bucks even if your not getting results, my wife recently got prescribed benadryl as a anti anxiety after being robbed at gun point and beaten while at work and the doc wasn't even a psychiatrist. By 'permanent addiction' do you mean that you need the medication on a permanent basis to retain the benefits, or do you mean that attempts to stop the medication produce withdrawal effects that never go away? The former is not uncommon. The latter is something I have not seen any statistics on. I have seen anecdotal claims of people experiencing permanent, undesirable effects from taking serotonergic medications. I have not read enough of these anecdotes to have a clear understanding of whether they are claiming that withdrawal effects continue, or other effects (e.g. affective or cognitive impairment) are the problem. I also haven't seen any statistics on the subject. There is evidence that serotonergic medications promote growth of serotonin receptors, and neurons, in the brain. It is also true that some people who have taken these medications find permanent benefits, which persist after they stop the medication. One could reasonably speculate that permanent improvements are linked to the growth of receptors and neurons. If so, then one might also speculate that people who respond badly to serotonergic medications might have some lasting negative effects also. That's a lot of speculation. What the truth is, I don't know. I would say that if permanent negative effects were common, we wouldn't be wondering how often they occur.
