I have been taking 20 mgs of Paxil for almost 2 years now, for severe depression/anxiety/panic attacks. I have had no panic attacks or severe bouts of anxiety for over a year now. I have told my psychopharmacologist several times now that I wanted to begin tapering off the Paxil but he wanted me to wait. I am thinking of having my first baby and really want all of these drugs out of my system. I took it upon myself to slowly taper down the Paxil going from 20 mgs to 10 mgs in 4 months time with minimal withdrawal.

I'm no expert, but I've quit Paxil twice, the first time quitting abruptly from 5 mg/day, and the next time tapering off from 5 mg/day over a few weeks to about 3 mg/day and stopping. Quitting abruptly from 5 mg/day was bad enough, so I can understand why your withdrawl is severe. As far as I know, you need to take Paxil at least once per day to keep your blood levels stable. If you took 10 mg every other day, you could be in perpertual withdrawl! I have had no experience of stopping Paxil and going back on, but if I were in your shoes, I would go back to 10 mg/day of Paxil until I felt myself again. Then I would slowly taper down to around 3 mg/day. I have the 20 mg tablets, so I'd take my handy tablet cutter I bought at my local drugstore and cut along the scores to get a bunch of 10 mg tablets. Then I would not be very careful about cutting those 10 mg pieces in half, so that some come out more then 5 mg and some come out less. Then each day I would take the biggest tablet, so that I would go from under 10 mg/day to under 5 mg/day. I might take a few weeks to taper off nice and slowly from 10 mg/day. Take the 10 mg tablet and disolve it in water. drink half as your daily dose one day, and the other half the next day.
