Try more like a natural cheap Nardil. Your calling it a "natural Prozac" is misleading as SJW is a MAOI, not an SSRI. If SJW was an SSRI, I would have tried it, and if it worked like my Zoloft, I would have stayed with it. Becuse it's a MAOI, I won't touch it. That's becuse of the restrictive MAOI Diet.
Answer:
Not all MAOIs have food restrictions (there is a new one whose name I forget) and also, I have two friends taking SJW regularly who haven't had any problem eating what they like. I take one of the MAOIs with food restrictions and therefore know what foods are verboten and what the symptoms are, should one eat a restricted food. Nobody I know taking SJW has had these symptoms. Considering that SJW takes about 3-4 weeks to work (and only seems effective on milder depressions) while Nardil took 48 hours to work spectacularly for me, I think there are a lot of differences between these two. Also, the 'restrictive MAOI diet' is not that bad unless you're a cheese addict. The success I had with Nardil, after trying tricyclics and SSRIs galore that sometimes made my symptoms worse, made the restrictive diet a small concern, relatively speaking. Lots of information at http://www.hypericum.com on SJW...that is the best site that I have found yet for information and it even has a link to a site on the latest research being done for SJW, and also how to get the research grade of SJW which is what I take and it works wonderful. I tried the SJW after getting off of Prozac but I have also taken Paxil..that just did not work for me. Prozac worked however the suicidal feelings scared me!!!! SJW seems to work in the same way that the Prozac did without the side effects. I've been using 300mg/day of SJW for 3 weeks. I have not taken any diet precautions. Although my normal diet aviods almost all of the items, except beer and wine, which are not recommended. I have had up to 2 beers a night or 1/2 bottle of red wine (Cab. Sav. or Merlot) with no hypertensive effects. I also have 1 cup of coffee/day. I don't know if it is related or not, but I seem to get more tired at the end of the work day than before and this weekend I was very "hyper". Both of these may be due to the fact I have a very demanding job and this was the first weekend in CA that it has not been raining in a long time. In terms of its effectiveness, I can't compare it to any persciption med since I have not taken any. I think it has been helpful in reducing the very negative mood which I have been in for many months. It may be having an effect on my sleep and dreaming patterns as I have been having anxiety-laced dreams which I have not had for many years. Again, this may be job-related.
