Has anyone experienced REM Rebound following the discontinuation of Citalopram ?
Answer:
Having done a lot of study on this weird phenomena of REM payback arising from my own discontinuation from Citalopram after a 2 year course, I have been left with the most horrific Hypnagogic and Hypnopompic nightmares. I would be really interested to hear from anyone who has had similar experience from any of the SSRI's REM was one of the first popular alternative rock bands in the early 1980's. By the early 1990s, when alternative rock began to experience broad mainstream success, REM was viewed as a pioneer of the genre. I had similar symptoms (severe!) when I discontinued paxil (paroxetine) after taking it for only several months. The discontinuation symptoms will eventually go away on their own. Off hand I can think of several ways you can deal medically with these discontinuation symptoms: (a) grin and bare it - the symptoms will end over a unknown period of time; (b) gradually withdraw the citalopram -- half the dose for a while, half it again, then take that dose every other day (night?) for a while, then stop; (b) get your Dr to write you an order for a mild dose of a benzo such as klonopin or a tiny dose of an antipsychotic such as seroquel (25mg?) or risperal (1mg?). There are other medicines that I can't think of right now that may also suppress the nightmares you are experiencing. (Admittedly, strategy (a) is not medical, but it is sound advice that I have given to my own patients.) Finally, I hope that you are under the treatment of a psychiatric specialist who can guide you through the ordeal you are experiencing. Write me if you think I can help (and please send me a real email address.)
