Question:
I am concerned about the long-term effects of Effexor (venlafaxine) on memory and cognition. I have been taking Effexor for approximately 10 months (after switching from Zoloft which led to emotional lability and zero libido). I have serious difficulty remembering names and words when engaging in conversation and even when simply thinking to myself. I work as a manager (I have six direct reports) and find my ability to communicate clearly and effectively nearly impossible at times. The inability to recall words has seemed to have gotten worse over time. Does anyone else experience this? Does anyone know if these effects on memory and thinking are permanent? Has anyone experienced this, gone off the medication and then had a return of the ability to recall names and words?

Answer:
I have been taking Effexor for four months and recently had an increase from 75mg to 150mg I have had a few side effects, and have to say that I haven't found it very useful as an AD but I would imagine that if it had effects on memory this would be either due to another medication or another factor. Do you take cannibis as a dep' relief I used to (still would if I could get any) but if so this definitly is a contender in memory loss particularly short-term. Another factor that can effect the memory is the deppression it's self and allthough the meds' can mask the the mental effects of depression it does not always help the physical effects, such as memory problems low-self esteem poor immunity and so on. If you do take any other meds' then let me know and I will tell you if this could be contributing to your M/L'. i take 187.5 milligrams of effexor daily; three tabs in the a.m. and two tabs mid-afternoon. i also take 30 to 40 mg of oxazepam(serax) at bedtime for sleep and as needed during the day for anxiety...i nearly never take it during the day tho', as it puts me to sleep. brad hall indicates that he takes effexor/luvox in combination; i had not heard of combining two SRI/SSRI's for therapeutic effect; perhaps this is something to discuss w/my p.c., but i would have assumed that he would have suggested such a strategy by now if he thought that it would be effective...i did have a terrible time with the zoloft, and was also taking cytomel and buspar in combination at that time. maybe his thoughts are to keep the dosing and drug combinations to a minimum. i do not take any other psychotropic medications and do not drink alcohol, nor do i smoke marijuana.
