I have been taking Paxil 20mg/day for over 5 years. This drug was prescribed as part of the treatment for primary chronic cluster headache, and was intended to reduce the frequency of headaches as well as treat depression which presumably resulted from the chronic pain. I would be interested in hearing from anyone else who has experienced similar symptoms upon cessation of long-term Paxil therapy. I would be particularly interested in hearing from anyone who can give me hope that these symptoms will go away shortly, or who can suggest another cause.
Answer:
I was only on Paxil 20mg for 6 months (to treat depression and anxiety). While it worked wonders for me while I was on it, I have had the exact same experience as you since I stopped taking it. Initially, I stopped taking Paxil, without tapering off, in mid-May, and within 72 hours I was having trouble walking down the street. I called my doctor (the head of psychiatry at a major hospital in Toronto) who said that he was sorry that he forgot to tell me that I could experience side effects if I stopped taking the medication without tapering off. He then prescribed 2 weeks of 10 mg and 2 weeks of 5 mg, so that I could wean myself off of it. I experienced a cessation of side effects/withdrawal symptoms for the 2 weeks on the 10 mg, but they returned when the dose was lowered to 5 mg, and worsened when I stopped taking Paxil altogether. I had a few very rough days, and now, almost 2 weeks after my last dose of Paxil, I still am experiencing the side effects/withdrawal symptoms you've described. My doctor said these could last 6-8 weeks, but since there's no literature, he's just guessing based on past patient experience. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
