I wondered if anyone who, like me, has previously taken Serzone or Dutonin (same medication, different countries) had found another anti-depressant with similar qualities?

Several years ago I was prescribed Serzone/Dutonin for severe depression. I found it easy to live with, even at high daily doses, with no side effects of any kind. It just gave me a gentle but very powerful mood lift. Sadly, the medication was withdrawn from the market because of risks of liver damage. Since then my Doctor has prescribed several anti-depressants but for me, all of them have serious side effects of various kinds. I would almost be prepared to risk my liver for the gentle, powerful effectiveness of Serzone/Dutonin, but obviously that isn't an option. I think it was a mistake for Serzone to be withdrawn, same with Tryptophan back in the early 90s. Unfortunately any hint of possible lawsuits and things change very rapidly. You could try mirtazapine (Zispin/Remeron), it can make you very drowsy to start with and has a tendency to cause weight gain if you're not getting much exercise, but the side effect profile other than that is very mild. I was on it for 3 years with no real problems, but it stopped working for me in .., partly due to my lifestyle and partly due to PTSD after being attacked, so I was put back onto Clomipramine (powerful antidepressant, unfortunately loads of side effects, but I am willing to put up with them) I'd speak to the doc, there are loads of ADs about these days.
