Question:
what happens to the average person who accepts things at face value?

Answer:
It is impossible for any physician to know everything about medicine. It's also difficult to get insurance to cover the care you need. Those two facts make it important for patients to be their own advocate and educate themselves. My son OD days before he was evaluated in the ER. On discharge I requested his labs and noted his liver function were mildly elevated. Otherwise I would not have known and no one said anything. I asked his PCP to repeat the liver function 2-3 weeks later. During that time he was started on Zyprexa and Cymbalta. The repeat liver functions were 3 xs more elevated than last one. The psychiatrist was perplexed and suggested switching from Zyprexa to Geodon. I did some independent research and discovered Cymbalta should not be used in people with liver problems. We would have continued the cymbalta. I could not believe how difficult it was for me to see one of the few certified specialists in my area. My insurance denied coverage twice. Fortunately, I played their game and eventually got what I wanted. But many people will give up after the first denial. I'm not trying to glorify myself but shudder to think what happens to the average person who accepts things at face value. Medicine is limited by the information you provide and the available information i.e. x-rays, tests, research. Another case of consumer know-how; our pet was severely ill with cancer tumours and was tested, (urine, x-rays, etc.) anaesthetized, operated, respirated, stitched, recovered, and treated with pain killers, and ready to go home in less than 24 hours. We did not have to say a medical word. Cost: $1,100.00 Cdn. I think there's something wrong with the medical system, and it's not that doctors can't know everything. You have to have doctors to begin with and enough medical staff for so many people.
