Does anyone have any experience he or she would like to share about Xanax? I've been on it now for eight months.
Answer:
I was on valium for 10 years and xanax for another 10. At the time I was put on xanax they thought it was the wonder drug the cure all. This May I decided against Dr.'s wishes I would try to go off of it. I was successful, but I went through a terrific withdrawal worse than heroin they say. Xanax is a highly addictive drug. It should be taken no longer than 6 months as you build up a tolerance to it and need more and more to get the same effect. Try to get with a therapist who can help you treat your problem holistically through meditation, prayer, exercise, cognitive therapy, etc. I take Xanax on an as need basis. Very low dose (1/2 of .25, yes point25, mg). It has helped me to take the "edge" off of a difficult situation (or what I thought was difficult). I recently was prescribed Prozac. After 6 days I had terrible side effects with the Prozac and am now taking a small dose of Zoloft in the morinings. Both Prozac and Zoloft allowed me to take Xanax for the "panic attacks" -vs- the depression. The Zoloft seems to be working better than the Prozac for me. I have not had to take a Xanax for 3 days now. I take Xanax on an as needed basis (.50) and Zoloft on a daily basis. You are right about Xanax that it does take the edge off situations. However, I have been cautioned that it is hight addictive and to use it carefully. Xanax addiction is a highly over rated concern. there is dependancy, but if you need it regularly or frequently you might just as well stay on it and the issue of dependancy is basically a non-issue. My point being if you only take it when you need it and you only need it VERY occasionally, then you won't become dependent. If you need it more often, your ability or willingness to tollerate the discomfort your symptoms cause will begin to fall and fall and fall and fall, until you choose zero tollerance, and then you are taking it pretty well all the time which is, again, no real issue. There are no awards for heroic efforts to tollerate regular frequent PAD/GAD symptoms. Just eventual exhaustion or burn-out and a so-so life for your loved ones as they live with you regularly fighting the good fight.
