Question:
How would you imagine the addition of neurontin/gabapentin (significant quantities along w/20 mg. nightly Valium) affect what you read?

Answer:
Since being diagnosed with sleep apnea and treated for it, Ive become more aware of common psychiatric drug effects on sleep architecture. Since one of the main complaints for people with serious mood disorders is sleep problems, I began doing my own informal research on the subject. I became particularly aware that benzodiazapines such as valium, xanax and klonopin suppress the deep stage, restorative sleep known as "slow wave sleep." Slow wave sleep is critical for feeling fully restored from a night's rest. I found a lot of stuff on Medline and other places that discussed the fact that klonopin and other benzos suppress slow wave sleep. I also found an interesting link from an actual practicing psychiatrist who discusses benzos slow wave sleep suppressing properties. The way you get diagnosed for sleep apnea is to go see a doctor who is a specialist in sleep medicine. For sleep apnea, oftentimes the best sleep docs were first trained as pulmonary doctors. Although there are many fine sleep medicine doctors who are Neurologists or even , psychiatrists! If the sleep doc thinks you might have apnea, you get referred to an overnight sleep study. They also have come out with some "home" sleep studies that for evaluating simple obstructive sleep apnea, I personally think are great as they test you in a "real world" environment (your bedroom) and you dont have to get up and out of the sleep lab at 6 am.
