How does one go about getting a prescription for Prozac? Can you get it from your regular physican or do you need to see a psychatrist?

As one who has been on Prozac for 8 years, let me warn you that it is not something to just "go on to". Also Prozac works best for only certain types of depression, where its Serotonin Reuptake Inhibition actually is relevant. It is certainly not the "liquid sunshine" and instant answer to everything that the newspapers would have U believe. On the other hand I am still here because of it and it is a million times better than Amitryptilene. Your physician can prescibe it, but you would be wise to seek accurate diagnosis from a specialist before going on to any anti-depresssant. I have been on Prozac for many years, occasionally trying something else, but end up coming back to Prozac. It is not a cure-all, All it does is alleviate the symptoms of depression with, in my case, the least amount of side effects. It does not solve any problems, and it is not a feel good drug. I take it because I need it, not because I want it. it worked very well for the first month. i truly thought that i would 'finally' be content with my life! it rfeally was fantsatic! however, as soon as 4 weeks elapsed, i went totally down hill. i became dillusional, had serious homicidal thoughts, began doing othe r very abnormal things (a bit too embarresing to mention here, sorry!), and it really came tyo a point when i found myself hunched in a corner in my room crying and screaming. i then spent a few days in ahospital, and taken off the drug. it truly was a horrible experience in the end.
