Question:
Does anyone have experience with either Effexor or Remeron in regards to depression? Any bad side effects?

Answer:
Take effexor. Having some insomnia and weakness (althoug that may be coming from my neuropathy.) I have been taking Effexor since May 1997, (I switched from Zoloft). I have experienced many side effects, some of which have diminished over time. Initially, I experienced severe nausea and vomiting. Within 6-7 days, however, I was able to begin taking it with less nausea and no vomiting. I split my tablets in half and increased the dosage slowy over the first 1-2 weeks. I experienced severe headaches and migraine as well. The migraines are infrequent; I've had four total since starting the Effexor. Nowadays, I do not experience nausea and have fewer headaches. Dry mouth is troublesome for me, and it is one effect that has not diminished at all. I do experience insomnia with the med, so I have been prescribed oxazepam for that; without the oxazepam, I really cannot sleep at all. Other side effects include dizziness, sweating more heavily, slightly blurred vision, and "jumpiness" in my leg and arm muscles...these side effects have improved over time for me. I am more used to them. One of the most difficult side effects is an inability to recall short-term memories (not *always* though) and an embarrassing inability to recall certain words- its like this: I will be talking with someone and will want to say the word "hat", for instance, " Did you remember to bring the hat with you?"....but I cannot seem to access the word hat at all! Its as though the word has been completely erased from my mind. This is definitely something that affects my work performance, and I have had a difficult time with it. The side effect profile is "friendlier" to me than the Zoloft's was. I am able to tolerate the Effexor better than the Zoloft, especially since I have not experienced a decrease in my libido at all (thank god!) which the Zoloft completely suppressed- that was intolerable for me. I also do not experience the emotional lability as much on Effexor vs. Zoloft; I feel emotionally more "stable", but I do experience an emotional "blunting" as I did with Zoloft...I guess that is one of the primary or desirable effects though...I don't go falling over the edge as frequently or with as much severity as with Zoloft or with no med at all!
