My wife who suffers from depression and Anxiety has been using fluoxetine and paroxetine and both have caused a loss of sexual desire. We are interested in Info from anyone who has tried St. John's Wort, the Homeopathy approach. I understand it doesn't come the the same side effects. Has anyone have info on WHERE to find out personal experiences with ST. Johns Wort.
Answer:
I was on Zoloft for a year and a half and one of the side effects that I found unacceptable was what it did to my sex life. Not only was I not interested, when I did make the effort, it took forever to reach orgasm and then it was so much less in sensation that before the med that it made me more depressed. I have been off Zoloft for a year and did give St. John's Wort a fair chance for several months recently. While it did not have any negative side effects, it was not effective at all in relieving this seemingly endless depression. I have since gone to a new doctor and have been prescribed with Wellbutrin. It has only been 4 days, so I have no idea what to expect with this med. I have read that it might possibly increase the libido ( oh, I hope, I hope!!!) . I have just ordered a bunch of books from Amazon.com on St. Johns Wort. I have not started taking it yet because I am still on Prozac but I am getting off it to try the SJW. Particulary for the fact of no side effects. and for the loss of sexual desire. I do know people who are taking it and I belong to a depression support group and will ask them for some feed back and post it. you say that you gave St. John's Wort a fair chance; could you elaborate a little? Specifically I'm interested in whether or not you tried SJW from different manufacturers. One thing that I see as tricky here is that this is a fairly unregulated(herbal medicines, that is) industry. Lots of room for companies more interested in making a buck than helping people with their problems. I would imagine that one would have their best luck using a formulation of SJW that is in widespread use in Germany where it has been taken for quite some time. Barring that, taking SJW from a very visible and respected company here in the US wouldn't be a bad idea. It may cost more but I would think it worthwhile if it makes a difference.
