I have been on Paxil 20mg now for over a year and a half and I have tried unsuccessfully to get off the medication several times. I always end up with the same symptoms: vertigo. Fortunately, these effects are reversible as soon as I get back on it ( within a day ).
Answer:
I have been prescribed SSRI's over the past 5 years and for the first 4 years there has been no doubt that firstly Prozac and more lately Paxil (Seroxat in the UK) helped me greatly with chronic and extremely destructive bouts of depression I have suffered since my early teens. I am not and expert in any thing other than my own case ... over the years I have had to be and have always sought the very best help I could find at the time. I have spent almost 3 years in hospital over the past 20 years when my depression has been at its worst. My worst fear is that I may become so withdrawn one day that continual ECT will be the only option. I wish I could give you some encouragment but unfortunately I am presently experiencing the same thing that you are. I've been on Paxil for 2 years and it did a good job of controlling my depression and anxiety attacks. Last fall, I tried to quit it and got dizzy and had a strange "swooshing" sound in my head (like sand being poured). So I went back on the Paxil and it went away. A few weeks ago my doctor advised me to just slowly wean myself off of the drug so I cut back to 5 mg. a day for 2 weeks and then to 5 mg every two days for 2 weeks. Things were fine until yesterday when i started experiencing anxiety again. Just this morning I was weeping for no reason (except the frustration of trying to get off of this drug!) I'm at a loss of what to do at this point. I REALLY want to get off of Paxil because I don't feel I need an antidepressant at this point. However, if the panic attacks are going to return there's NO WAY I want to go through those again! I took 5 mg. today and will probably take another 5 mg. tomorrow and call my doctor about what to do. You didn't mention panic attacks so maybe you don't suffer from that aspect of it. Another person emailed me and said she had to take an anti-anxiety drug while she was weaning off of Paxil to get her through.
