Question:
I find that paxil actually clears up my anger and bad temper completely. What worries me is that I have been on it for four years and no matter how slowly I try to taper off all the symptoms return when I get to about 10 milligrams per day (half my normal dose)

Answer:
I don't understand why you want to go off it. Paxil doesn't 'fix' your problem. Paxil will interfere with the reuptake of serotonin, and this is what is helping you. But if you stop taking the paxil, the drug won't be stopping the premature reuptake of serotonin, and you will just go back to being the way you used to be. I've read other messages, suggesting that people might think that paxil fixes their depression, and that after they can stop taking it. Some people will have depression, or anxiety problems that are just temporary, and some people its chronic, if its chronic, then you should be taking the paxil for as long as the problem is chronic, which might be forever. Personally I'd rather feel no emotion, if my other choice was to feel only negative ones. But that isn't your only option. If you've only tried paxil, then try a different anti-depressant, don't just stop there. I've read about people trying sometimes a few different medications and/or dosages before they found something that worked for them. Plus you don't have to always stop the paxil and have the depression come back before you switch. Some can be taken concurrently. So you'd be lowering the paxil, while raising the dosage of the new med. This would leave you with less withdrawel time.
