Question:
Can anyone please provide me with information on the possibilities one can do with weight gain problem with seratonin based medications. Effexor, which i am on right now, has made me gained 15 pounds. Paxil made me gain 40 pounds. Is there medicines out there that along with seratonin based drugs that do not allow you to gain weight? What about St Johns Wort. Could anyone compare St Johns Wort to Effexor with experience?

Answer:
Gained 50 lbs. on amitriptyline (Elavil) and nortriptyline EACH; four lbs. in eight weeks on trazodone (Desyrel), at which rate is 24+ lbs./year; 20 on effexor in six months (plus horrible problems on it, and even worse when going off it); and have been on Serzone about two weeks...betcha I'll gain on that, too, no matter what the drug profile is. I resent having to do major diets after going off an antidepressant, but I've had to d/c in order to get to a healthy weight (not to mention just to feel okay about myself). If anyone knows of an effective AD without this side effect, I'd love to know about it. Most of the SSRIs and the newer ad:s, such as Effexor should usually decrease your appetite; in other words you lose the feeling of being hungry even if it were time for a meal. The ad:s that have a sedating effect( most of the trisyclics and Remeron) on the other hand increase the feeling of being hungry. The general misunderstanding that the medication itself would make you fat is absolutely untrue! You are simply overeating because you feel hungry all the time. The only cure is really to pay attention to the amount of calories consumed and exercise more. Does anyone know the mechanism by which hunger is increased on SRIs? My thinking is that if you know what happens biochemically, perhaps you could adjust your eating patterns to compensate. Actually, when I was on nortriptyline, even when I dieted and exercised like a crazy woman, I was still putting on weight. I think the medication does actually affect your metabolism or something, because I was definitely NOT overeating, because I knew in advance that weight gain was a problem with that med, so was watching what I ate very carefully. Something else is going on, although I don't know biologically what exactly the cause is.
