I wonder if the FDA has a new class of antidpressants out with less side effects.

Answer:
My friend has been eating a macrobiotic [?] diet for a year now and stopped her meds. She is losing her memory and keeps cutting herself. Any suggestions about a good diet. She was on Prozac. I see various ideas going around (about cortisol, Substance P, mifepristone), but nothing about to be released. Techniques like Deep Brain Stimulation and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation might be worth looking at, though. I'm dubious about Vagus Nerve Stimulation at this point. Your friend appears to have more going on than just depression. I'd suggest that she get back into psychiatric care and get her medication restarted. Self-mutilation (i.e. cutting) suggests a personality disorder (borderline - ?) to me. Dietary change is helpful and fine but no substitute for something this severe. This may come as old news to this group. I have been out of practice for quite a while (retired psych NP) but I believe there IS a new antidepressant Pristiq, made by Wyeth. If memory serves me, it is related chemically to Effexor and it consists of the active metabolite(s?) found in Effexor. If you Google the word Pristiq I am sure you will learn more than you ever wanted to know about it. From my few minutes of reading about it, Pristiq sounds like a variation on an old theme and nothing too revolutionary. Expect the usual side effects.
