According to an article in last week's Newsweek, 5-HTP (legal and available in health food stores) is the immediate precursor to serotonin when metabolized in the brain and is compared favorably with several SSRI's WITHOUT the side effects common to these (and other) types of drugs. It passes the blood/brain barrier unlike L-tryptophan (now banned by the FDA) and requires smaller doses in combination with vitamin B6 (taken >3 hours before/after the 5-HTP.
Answer:
The best source of serotonin is bananas. There is a disease caused by too much serotonin, you've probably read about it in the press with regard to the diet pill dextrofenflouramine--fibrosis of the lining of the heart and the pulmonary vessels. There is a tribe in south africa that eats bananas as their mainstay and have an endemic disease called south african subendocardial fibroelastosis as a result of the high serotonin levels. Don't know if they have a low level of depression though. Anyway, be careful: it's potentially dangerous and no one knows how much for how long is safe. L-Tryptophan is not legal in the US. There ARE some interesting articles on the web; search for "5-HTP", "Serotonin Deficiency Syndrome", or "Controversy Erupts About Safety of 5-HTP". After taking 5-htp for a little over a week (vitamins in tha morning, 60mg 5-htp plus 3mg xanax about an hour before bed) I'm beginning to feel that I'm moving in a positive direction: Provided I get sufficient sleep I'm feeling significantly calmer and clearer the next day than was typical without the 5-htp and most importantly without the splitting headache (and other side effects) that invariably accompanied the anti-depressants I was prescribed.
