This may be throwing the cat amongst the pigeons but I'd like to hear of anyone who has given it serious effort to beat depression without medication. I don't mean not taking any meds at all but to go off them once things go better. I've been on and off aurorix (moclobemide) for nearly 5 years. The psychiatrist I saw 5 years ago said I should stay on it solid. It been a roller coaster ride and I'm wondering whether it would have been any easier had I listened to him. Personally I've struggled with having to take medication and would really like to function normally without it.
Answer:
I value the new SSRI drugs as they can be very much better than the Tricyclics, which were pretty nasty to take. People can get resistant to them, however, and the dose has to be increased (see posting Danielle etc ). They also have rather subtle side effects such as poor memory (Sertraline) and do not improve one's sex life. I am very keen to promote alternative ways of combating depression. There are other ways of boosting Serotonin, some of which are not healthy e.g. smoking, alcohol, gambling (why are these pastimes so popular? :-) One thing is very obvious. We are becoming a very inactive species. We drive everywhere, some are into exercise, but the remainder seem to compensate by wearing sporty clothes ( why is Adidas so successful?). Any one with depression or a tendency that way should look at their exercise level. Depression invariably inhibits activity. Boosting serotonin takes at least 30 mins of hard exercise every other day. Alternatively, some form of healthy risk-taking activity ( I've done a lot of gliding) is an alternative. I strongly favour the idea of alternative ways of keeping Depression in check.Having been on and off SSRI's and living in Serontine depleted world I can testify the need of Other ways. But what other?? sometmes it becomes extremley difficult to find a right mix of Exercise ,Food, herbs, medicines, lifestyle, psychotherapy etc to build an effective arsenal. For one everbody is diffrent and Psychiartist seldom acknowledge such alternative to their beloved SSRi's. Second there is no reliable data which can point towards such alternatives. My father and one of my two sisters are also Bipolar. My brothers are unaffected as is my eldest sister although she has had some problems with ADHD as a youngster. The sister who is Bipolar has two daughters and one of them has been diagnosed as ADHD and is 8 years old. My father was not diagnosed until around 1991 and already into his fifties. At that time my sister had already been diagnosed and I was to be diagnosed within the next year or so. (We were both in our early twenties at time of diagnosis.) I am glad that my father and mother did not know that my father was Bipolar as they may have chosen not to have children. As it is, though I face a lifetime on medication, I would rather be here and be Bipolar than never to have been born at all. The possibility of having a child who is Bipolar is strong.... stronger perhaps in my case as there is such frequency in my immediate family. As of yet, none of my brothers' children are symptomatic nor is my sister's second child who is 5. (My eldest sister does not have children.) However, if it comes down to it, the only reason I may choose not to have children is if I cannot go off medication long enough to carry a child to full term and still be safe. I take Depakote (Valproic Acid) and it is known to cause skeletal defects in fetuses. This medication has been my miracle drug. Once I have been stable for more than 2 years without an episode, then I will again address the issue of bearing a child. Still, such a issue will not go without the advice and supervision of my pdoc. I barely breathe without her ever watchful eye! :)
