i've been on my second go-round with luvox for a few months.. it seemsas if all of a sudden in has stoped working and i feel the deep depression startingup again.. can a med just stop working all of a sudden?
Answer:
This is a well-described phenomenon with SRIs (serotonin reuptake inhibitors). There are several possible solutions, including augmentation with a second antidepressant (e.g. adding low doses of welbutrin to an SRI) or changing to another SRI . My own preference is to add an antidepressant working on a different neurotransmitter : add a noradrenergic medication (e.g. desipramine) or a mixed noradrenergic-dopaminergic medication (e.g. wellbutrin) to the initial medication. This preserves whatever benefit has been obtained from the first medication trial and may cut down on the time to a therapeutic reponse/remission. The above is general medical information and not intended as specific patient advice. Consultation with your psychiatrist or a psychopharmacologist is always recommended.
