Question:
Then why do you have a problem believing it can be a symptom of a chemical imbalance in the neurotransmitters that make thought possible?

Answer:
"Suffering from something more basic." This would certainly explain why up to 3x times as many women suffer from depression than men, and further broken down, married women suffer from depression more than single woman. The first may help to justify the biological (or chemical) diagnosis, but that falls apart when you figure in marriage vs. single stats. It says more about the institution of marriage than about chemical compounds in our heads. In my experience, I watched more TV on Prozac, read less, and the Ativan I had to take to help with insomnia and anxiety caused somewhat by the Prozac interfered with short-term memory, which is so essential when formulating ideas. So no, I would say Prozac didn't make me smarter, it made me less sensitive, less interested, more compliant, and therefore a tad happier. But the price was too high for a bit of common happiness. This is a good debate here and only have edited it for brevity. St. John's Wart worked pretty well for me, plus some aerobic exercises- running, sit-ups, push-ups, etc. Secondly, vitamins are helpful, such as B, C, and minerals. I also find self-expression is helpful- in my case, writing. With depression, keeping up one's health is essential. I don't think depression necessarilly has deeper social implications, any more than does mania, psychopathy, or schizophrenia.
