Question:
Anybody out there have good anecdotal evidence as for the use of treating sexual dysfunction with use of Ginko (the herb) while on a.d's.(Like the SRI's??) Some of the research (from Medline) indicates it may be effective. Curious to hear some first person accounts.

Answer:
I tried it - huge doses of gingko biloba (twice what most people would take) to alleviate SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction. (I read on the web you needed to take something like 240 mg/day, which is quite a lot.) It worked a bit (and I stress - a BIT) but not as much as I'd hoped. I'm now taking Wellbutrin SR 100 mg/day (which is 1/3 the clinical anti-depressant dose) and have found it to be quite effective in restoring sex drive, and the orgasms come (no pun intended) easier. I think it makes a good combo with the Paxil I take. I've been on Zoloft for close to year and when I discussed lack of libido he recommended Ginko. I took it for a while, but for me it really didn't do anything so I discontinued. I've heard others say that it's worked for them, not the same as pre-meds, but not like post-meds either. Now I'm thinking about Wellbutrin and taking it in conjuction with the Zoloft. It's supposed to boost energy and take care of that nasty libido side effect!!! Used it to try and help short term memory problems after ect....didn't expect it to work....but it did...did not notice any help with sexual disfunction...seems to have no side effects, nor interfere with meds... You can take buspar with benzo's. Our site Dr. does it all the time. My fiancee is on buspar and xanax. As far as protecting against sexual side effects, buspar is in the antihistamine class, so there could be a lessening of side effects, but the same would be true of benadryl. You couldn't use buspar with a MOAI because of severe side effects.
