Question:
Since I understand that Wellbutrin has a stimulating effect similar to an amphetamine, would it be reasonable to expect that "if all things were equal" (food intake, exercise etc.) I would not gain any weight from stopping smoking?

Answer:
It would not be reasonable to expect anything to be equal and fair about your trying to quit smoking. Expect the unexpected that's the beast advice that I can give you, cause every one is differnet. No one has the magic pill for ya. You just have to give it a go and see what happens. The most important thing is that you quit, who care wheather you put on a couple of pounds. Let's see a couple of pounds or black lungs and cancer, gee I kind of think that it's a no brainer but you may be a little bit more vane than I. If that is true find something that works for you, just quit. I would imagine that if you continued your workouts at the gym that the wieght gained, if any would be either toned or put into muscle. Again everyone is different and I am not a doctor and I don't know what your history is so I can't really give you an informed opinion on you only you and your doctor can do that. Trial and error is how it works in life, Trial and error. Although a pharmacist has more technical knowledge and all that, I think you are quite mistaken that Wellbutrin SR's "stimulating effect" is similar to amphetamines. Different chemistry altogether and it affects different areas of the brain. Wellbutrin SR is an anti-depressant. However it is noted that Wellbutrin SR use sees a low incidence of weight gain. I don't expect that it would be true for *all* who use it, however, as individual metabolic rates vary from one individual to the next. Response will vary by person, many people - including me - definitely feel a little 'wound up' when taking the drug, at least in the first week. I had the 'jitters' and some twitching the first week I was on it, then this effect faded. Many side-effects of Wellbutrin subside after the first week in most people. Dont forget that you don't take Wellbutrin long term. Its to be used for the first few months at time of 'quitting'. A person has this time to work on other items that will work for him/her long term... exercise, smaller helpings, extra water, bulky meals(salads, etc), etc that will help in the long run. At least a person doesn't have to face the extra burden of replacing a nervous habit early on.
