I am taking Zoloft for depression. I also take the hormone melatonin to help me sleep. I take both at bedtime. Is this a good combination?
Answer:
Okay, I don't have any medical facts to back this up, but I feel compelled to share my experience. I've always had a war waging with sleep, and decided to try Melatonin for help with this. About a month after beginning to take Melatonin, I had the worse manic phase (pulling my hair out, etc...) of my life. It was this manic phase that pushed me to seek help and begin taking lithium. I have no proof of any kind that the Melatonin contributed to this, but I would advise anybody to do some research on this before you take it, or anything for that matter. Our psyche's are very fragile. I did ask my doctor and his advice was that melitonin can cause anyone suffering depression to become more depressed. While I am pretty much recovered after a rather long battle, still think I don't need anything that might cause me difficulty. I agree with Howard - I break a standard 3mg tablet in half, then dissolve it in my mouth (works much more quickly that way). If I take a whole tablet, I have nightmares and wake up groggy. 1.5mg, on the other hand, puts me peacefully to sleep. I dream maybe a little more memorably than I would without it, but not the hideous nightmares that the full tablet gave me. I only use it when the insomnia gets too bad, and mostly because insomnia triggers suicidal ideation for me. I have used melatonin to fall asleep. It lingered to long in the morning and I had trouble feeling fully awake at work. Now I used my dawn simulator. 15 minutes before I'm ready to go to bed I turn the light on and it gradually lowers the light until it goes out. This simulates natural sunset. It works for me.
