Question:
What's the generic name of Celexa ? Sound like I'd like to be switched from paroxetine to this one, `cause I've got BIG-TIME sleeping problems from the seroxat (=paroxetine=paxil). Is it an SSRI or a newer AD with intramolecular multipharmacology like Remeron.

Answer:
Celexa is Citalopram Hydrobromide and is also a SSRI but has a much lower "activation" property then the standard Prozac/Paxil/Zoloft. It has been in use in Europe for many years and is one of the most used AD there. It basically has no side effects ( I had a small problem with sleeping the first two weeks) is normally dosed one time per day at either 20 or 40 mg and in many cased, takes less time then the standard 4-6 weeks to start to work. You might need to call your drug store to see if it has any problems getting this one, its very new in the states and also very much in demand, mine at first took a little time to find it, but no problems now. Interesting that you comment about Remeron, a large English study had it (Celexa) combined with Remeron 15 mg and it worked well. Celexa's generic name = citalopram. It's another SSRI most akin to Luvox (wij noemen dat Fevarin) in that it is more *selective* in its effect on serotonin receptors than the others like Paxil (Seroxat), Zoloft or Prozac (in that order). It is claimed to have less side effects, particularly sexual dysfunction but the jury's still out on that. I dont think this is so rare. A few weeks after starting prozac I felt my way into an optician and after he tested my eyes he declared them to be OK. I told him that that might be so but I was now as blind as a bat. His first question then was,"are you on antidepressants?" Stronger glasses have fixed the problem but I have know of several other people with similar stories. Fortunately less serious in degree than your was. a-d's seem to relax me. i can only think that they relax eye muscles too.
