I am more hesitant to see its relation for depression
Answer:
After reading some really good stuff on neuroses, such as anxiety, and phobias, I am beginning to appreciate the value of psychoanalysis-- not cognitive psychology or talk therapy, but actual good ol' fashioned- psychoanalysis. I am more hesitant to see its relation for depression and the big ones, though but i may be wrong. Medication is still helpful, but sometimes it is just the stress of things that analysts deal with. I never thought I would find myself saying this. I find it surprising actually -- i thought psychoanalysis was dead; my opinion about its superiourity to cognitive therapy and behavioural modification, rests on the assumption that life events can lead to trauma or habitual maladaptive ways of dealing with conflicts. I am not sure that psychoanalysis can have good treatments for such rooted emotional disorders, but i think it might discover the cause. Habits being what they are, it may not be possible to reverse the damage just because it is recognized-- much like unlearning to ride a bicycle or a language. That's why drugs may still be the preferred treatment. But, there certainly a great deal of value in the human touch in understanding the cause of emotional disorders. Another thing about cognitive therapy is that when the disorder is emotionaly rooted, it is not amenable to cognitive or rational treatment. The archives or psychology are fascinating -- i'm reading Roy Porter on the history of psychiatry and the changing models... if you have other literature to suggest on the topic, i'd pleased to receive any suggestions.
