have just been switched from effexor to wellbutrin, but the pharmacist says its the same type of drug as zyban which is used to help people stop smoking. Is wellbutrin an antidepressant? I'm taking it with depakote...or has the pdoc screwed up?

I was told by my Dr. that Zyban is the same drug as Wellbutrin and is prescribed in the same dosages to help people quit smoking. Yes it is an antidepressant, but it apparently helps with some addictive behaviors. I doubt that it will make you quit smoking if you really don't want to. It is also supposed to be free of the sexual side effects of other SSRIs. I have not taken this as of yet although it is next on the list if Serzone doesn't work. So far it seems to be OK. They are the same (bupropian) but Zyban is controlled release while Wellbutrin comes in two strengths 75mg and 100mg. I think Zyban is 150mg. It's true that if you don't want to quit smoking, no problem, although after about 2 weeks of being on Wellbutrin, I started to lose the urge to smoke and gave it up! It did take about 10 days for me to start to feel better (depression) and I think they say you should give it at least 4 weeks, or more, to get results. I take 300mg/day, 100 mg morning, noon, and early evening. For me, Wellbutrin has very few side effects (dry mouth, increased perspiration especially in hot weather), but I was told these should fade after a few weeks. And it's worked better (for me) than Prozac, Zoloft, and Elavil.
